Liz on Real Food

Liz started eating Real Food, loosely based on the Paleo Diet, a couple of months ago.  Here's what she has to say about it:

          “I have always had an issue with food and diet. I’m an active individual but I tend to over eat, or rather eat the wrong foods.  I was always eating a lot of heavy foods and have a sweet tooth. I have struggled with weight and body image for a long time. I decided to join Element CrossFit to take control of that struggle and change it into something positive. I have been a part of Element CrossFit for 9 months now, had amazing results, I’m stronger and able to do things I never thought I could. After about 8 months I hit a wall. I noticed that I got tired during workouts easily. I wasn’t performing like I wanted to be. After one particular work out, Rachael finally turned to me and told me it was time to fix my diet. She told me about the Paleo diet.

CrossFit has changed my life.  It has changed the way I think and feel about myself. 

I remember the first day I walked into Element CrossFit and thought to myself, as I watched some people training, "I can't do that...I will never be able to do that." But in a couple of weeks I was doing everything that I didn't think that I could ever do.

When I first heard about CrossFit, I was nervous to try it. I thought that at my fitness level, I could never do something so intense. When Element CrossFit opened, I had to give it a try. When I got to the gym, I knew that training there was going to be serious. No mirrors for you to check yourself out in, no CHUM FM, no machines, and no TVs.

I was turning 50 and I knew that I had to do something about my fitness level.  My mother had died at the age of 47 with a long history of heart disease. 

My present job gives me very little time to work out and when I can the time varies from day to day. Element CrossFit gives me the flexibility that I cannot get at other CrossFit gyms.  I like Element CrossFit because they have an open door concept.  You can come in at any time, day or night and work out for however long you want.

I have been working with Alex and Rachael at Element CrossFit since December, 2008.  They amaze me with their positive outlook on life, approach to fitness and overall enthusiasm.  I have come a long way since starting my workout regime, my body looks great, my strength has increased dramatically and my overall level of endurance has increased dramatically. I have been taught not only about fitness and weight training but also how to eat healthy for best results...

When I first heard about Rachael opening a gym, I figured I'd go check it out for a bunch of reasons, the main one being that as a friend, I felt I should go check it out to encourage her.  When I walked through those doors, on Monday, September 14th, 2008 at 5:34 pm (4 minutes late), I did not expect what I saw.  I expected a bunch of machines, people with their hoods onlistening to their iPods, acting big and tough etc. I expected a 1-hour training session, using said machines (which were surprisingly nowhere to be found), with endless repetitions of mind-numbing exercises...

I had been very active and strong in my youth, but when I started at Element CrossFit at age 60 I was just looking to lose weight and stay active. After 6 months, I’ve lost weight, gotten stronger and more flexible. It has made the rest of my life outside the gym easier, too. The knee pain I used to experience while walking up and down stairs has disappeared, and I have more energy now than I can ever remember. I really enjoy the feeling of accomplishment after a strength training session, I never thought in my life that I’d be able to lift 195 pounds but I did it!

I started Crossfit about 6 months ago now. Like many people I was a little intimidated when I heard about the workouts. I thought I would have to start working out somewhere else to get in shape for CrossFit first. Then I figured out CrossFit is what gets you into shape. I am constantly impressed and proud of the things I can do. I am stronger, faster, have more energy and most importantly I am more confident than ever before. I have never felt better about myself and with each workout, each new skill learned or bettered, that confidence grows.

After sustaining a serious injury to my knee, I was told that many of the sports and activities that I loved would be painful, if not impossible. After attending Element CrossFit for only a few months, and with the help of my trainers, Rachael and Alex, I can now do things that were impossible for me when I started.
