ECF Ontario Challenge 2010 Events Announced

Understanding Prescribed Weights: Men's Rx'd / Women's Rx'd + Men's Scaled / Women's Scaled

Understanding Overall Scoring: 1 point for 1st place, 2 points for 2nd, etc. Least points at the end of all 4 events wins.

Difficulty Levels: Competitors have until Wednesday, June 23rd at 12noon to make any needed changes to their difficulty levels. Please e-mail challenge@elementcrossfit.com.

Schedule Changes and Heat Assignments: Due to a large number of last minute registrations (we are now at 100 registered competitors) a revised schedule will be released with the Heat Assignments on Thursday June 24th after any possible revisions to difficulty levels are received.


Event #1 - Beep Test

The beep test, also known as the multi-stage fitness test, is used by sports coaches and trainers to estimate an athlete's VO2 max (maximum oxygen uptake). The test is especially useful for players of such sports as rugby, soccer, hockey, netball, handball or tennis, and is employed by many international sporting teams as an accurate test of Cardiovascular fitness, one of the all-important "Components of Fitness".

The test involves running continuously between two points that are 20 m apart. These runs are synchronized with beeps at set intervals. As the test proceeds, the interval between each successive beep reduces, forcing the athlete to increase their speed over the course of the test, until it is impossible to keep in pace with the recording (or, in rare occasions, if the athlete completes the test).

Event #1 Scoring:

Highest level completed + last shuttle completed = Score (i.e. Level 8 + Shuttle 3 = Score 8.03)

Event #1 Notes:

  • Competitors start behind one of the lines facing the second line, and begin running when the beep sounds.
  • Competitors continue running between the two lines, turning when signaled by the beep.
  • If the line is not reached in time for each beep, the subject must run to the line turn and try to catch up with the pace within 2 more beeps.
  • If the line is reached before the beep sounds, the subject must wait until the beep sounds to start the next shuttle.
  • The test is stopped when the subject fails to reach the line for two consecutive ends.

Event #2 - Clean-to-Thruster/Chest-to-Bar Ladder

Competitors will have 20 seconds to complete a rep at each of 10 Clean-to-Thruster stations, then they have 10 seconds to move to the next station. There are four pullup stations interspersed throught the event at which competitors will have 20 seconds to complete as many reps as possible before moving to the next station.

Event #2 Scoring:

Highest weight lifted successfuly + total number of pullups = score (i.e. 205 clean-to-thruster + 55 chest-to-bar pullups = 260)

Event #2 Notes:

  • Event 2 begins exactly 45 minutes after the start of Event 1 - the order will be determined by the beep test score, from each heat the lowest score goes first, highest score goes last.
  • Competitors MUST complete a minimum of one successful rep at each station in order to proceed to the next station.
  • If a competitor fails a rep they can re-attempt the rep within the remainder of the 20 seconds.
  • You CANNOT jerk the bar to lockout from your shoulders you must do a Thruster - Front Squat-Push Press.

Event #3 - Deadlift, HSPU, Kettlebell Swing

As many rounds as possible in 8 minutes of:
5 Deadlifts 275#/185#/135#
5 men/3 women Handstand Pushups*/5 Pushups men & women scaled
10 Kettlebell Swings 70#/50#/35#

Event #3 Scoring:

Every Rep Counts - Total number of Rounds + Reps completed within the alotted time converted into a decimal. (i.e. 5 Rounds + 10 Reps = 5.5 Score)

Event #3 Notes:

  • You CANNOT drop the bar from the top of a rep, hands must be in contact with the bar until bar touches the ground
  • Handstand Pushups Standard - Two 35# Hi-Temp Bumper Plates on either side of an AbMat, Hands must be completely on the raised centre of the plate at all times.
  • Feet must remain in contact with the wall during each HSPU rep - you cannot complete a rep while falling away from the wall. 
  • Kettlebell Swings Standard - Arms must break parallel, bell must be pointing in the same direction as the arms it cannot be allowed to droop at the top of the swing.

*Event #3 Women's Rx'd Modification:

Rx'd women will have the option of doing 3 HSPU or 10 Regular Pushups. All Rx'd women that complete at least one round of the workout with full HSPU will finish ahead of those Rx'd women that do 10 pushups as a sub regardless of the # of rounds completed. The rest of the competition will remain unchanged.

The women that do HSPU's will be scored against the other competitors that do HSPU's based on total rounds completed with HSPU. They can switch to regular pushups if their HSPU's fail, and remaining scaled rounds completed will differentiate any ties that may occur.

So for example: 4 Rds w/HSPU > 2 Rds w/HSPU + 3 Rds reg pushup > 1 Rd w/HSPU + 5 Rds reg pushup > 1 RD w/HSPU + 3 Rds reg > 10 Rds reg pushup.

Event #4 Scoring:

Every Second Counts - Fastest time to complete the alotted work to the nearest second.

Event #4 Notes:

  • This event has a 13-minute time cap. If a competitor hasn't finished the workout at the 13 minute mark their workout will be scored in an 'Every Rep Counts' fashion. 
  • Clean & Jerk is Ground-to-Overhead standard - however bar must stop at shoulders
  • Hands must be in contact with the bar from ground until overhead
  • Burpee - Down: chest and thighs to the ground - Up: hips and arms open body oriented completely vertical. How competitors move between positions is personal preference. Efficiency of movement = faster movement.

Hey Dawson - the Clean & Jerks can definitely be Power Cleans. Jerks can be Push Jerks or Split Jerks or even push press if you prefer. As long as it finishes locked out overhead

The beep test is the version as charted here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M...tness_test

It starts at 8.5km/h and increases to the last Level at 18.5km/h. There are 21 levels and an increasing number of shuttles throughout the test.

Sorry for the confusion it would read better as follows.

5 HSPU - Men Rx'd
3 HSPU - Women Rx'd
5 Pushups - Men Scaled
5 Pushups - Women Scaled

We've had a few women e-mail that can do everything Rx'd instead of HSPU, I'm working on a way that they can stay with Rx'd weights and regular pullups in the Ladder wod, but sub out HSPU's in the AMRAP.

The proposal is to give Rx'd women the option of doing 3 HSPU or 10 Regular Pushups. All Rx'd women that completed at least one round of the WOD with full HSPU will finish ahead of those Rx'd women that do 10 pushups as a sub regardless of the # of rounds completed. The rest of the competition would remain unchanged.

The women that do HSPU's will be scored against the other competitors that do HSPU's based on total rounds wHSPU's completed. They can switch to regular pushups if their HSPU's fail, and remaining scaled rounds completed will differentiate any ties that may occur.

So for example:

I would do these wods if alex had some mens weights for the Deadlifts. The girls have to be strong (HSPU and 185 DL) but the guys have a light metcon with the DL's at a warm up weight of 275? What gives Cibiri? Did Alarcon choose these weights for the men?

Hey Angie,

If someone does all HSPU they'll beat the person who does pushups regardless of how many rounds they get.

For those that are proficient at HSPU 3 will go by much quicker than 10 legit pushups, which should also give an added advantage in rounds.

Unfortunately the reason this was introduced for the women was the influx of e-mails I got from women that would have to switch to the scaled division based on the HSPU's alone that the Rx'd division wouldn't be nearly as competitive as it could be. (Just think back to last years games where a whole bunch of people DNF'd because of HSPU).

If this only ends up helping 5 women they'll end up placing in the bottom 5, if it helps out 35 then the top 5 will be those few who can do HSPU.

It's a solution, perhaps not the best one but I'm open to any suggestions.

Competitors can use wrist wraps, knee sleeves (NO knee wraps), weight belts, and oly shoes for any of the wod's if you like.

Just wanted to give my input on the womens Rx'd division in regards to WOD #3. I believe I understand how you have it laid out but there could potentially be a problem with allowing competitors to scale the WOD to pushups when it comes to the final standings.

Here is the scenerio. Say 5 competitors do the WOD as Rx'd with HSPUs No matter how they finish compared to those who either did 1 round with HSPUs or all rounds with just pushups they will finish 1st-5th. The problem lies with a competitor doing 1 round of HSPUs then switching to pushups and finishing with the max rounds thus having a placing of 6th. If this competitor does well in the other WODs and edges out any of the top 5 in WOD #3 they can still potentially win the games even though they scaled WOD #3. This i don't believe is fair since they still scaled the WOD. I know many people who can do a faster 10 pushups then someones 3 HSPUs. The demand on the body is far superior in the HSPUs having to go upside down and press over head everytime they reach that exercise.

If this is being done because there are only a limited number of females who can do HSPUs in the Rx'd Division would be or the scaled division would then become to large. Then maybe completely removing the HSPUs and putting something in it's place ie "heavy" pushpress would be more suitable.

It would suck to see a person win a Rx'd division having scaled a WOD.

Just my 2 cents.

Like I said it might not be the best solution but it's better than leaving the WOD as is.

Because Event #3 is scored as every rep counts, all women would do the 5 deads and then we'd watch some of them practice HSPU for 7 minutes and 50 seconds.

If only 10 female competitors can do HSPU (Just a guess at a number no offense people smilies/smiley.gif ) we would be left with a 25 way tie for 11th place with all those competitors scoring 5 reps completed. And then Event #3 has pretty much no effect on the standings at all.

Removing HSPU from the event only serves to 'dumb' it down, and punishes those athletes who have worked hard and practiced them for hours in the gym.

As for a "heavy" push press, I would wager the athletes that would breeze through a "heavy" push press are also those who can do HSPU as both are a measure of OH strength. Also, quite frankly a push press is an 'any man, or woman in this case' exercise. Any person off the street can do a push press, some heavier than others. But HSPU is generally a skill that CrossFitters should be far more proficient at when compared to a person walking off the street.

If this was a qualifier I would likely have both HSPU and MU's and if you couldn't do it then tough beans you scale down, but seeing as this is a friendly test of general fitness why not reward the athlete who put in the extra work?

As far as the perception of 'scaled' vs Rx'd - I am amenable to rewriting the scoring rules to make it clear that no one is scaling and make HSPU's 'bonus points' if that makes it an easier pill to swallow.

Pete - when we have 10 600lb tires and 10 300lb and 10 150lb tires all the same brand and size, we'll toss in tire flips etc into some workouts.

I was bummed that I couldn't come and then circumstances abruptly changed Friday evening. Now I'll be there, and I'm peeing myself. I just might need a puke bucket for the first time since doing CrossFit. It's the Beep test that is giving me the most stress. Running is NOT my forté, but I'll do my best and push my limits. Can't wait!
